We are excited about the launch of our second production of the summer 2015 – The Two Gentlemen of Verona.
Leave it to Shakespeare to hit a home run with his first crack at bat. Sparkling with wit and energy, The Two Gentlemen of Verona helped launch both his career and the rom-com genre. In fact, Two Gentlemen offers everything you could want in a romantic comedy: moony and misguided guys, smart and resourceful gals, a road trip, a funny bit with a dog and, of course, plenty of cross-dressing.
Oak Park Festival Theatre’s outdoor production is set in the over-the- top, youth-centric 1980s world of John Hughes and his club of endearing scoundrels. Think Ferris Bueller in rhyming couplets! This story charts the courses of two young men away from home for the first time, discovering not only the way ahead but also, eventually, the way back home.
As any young person, they question not only “who am I?” but also “what exactly can I get away with?” They test the bounds and bonds of friendship, love, and the law. Luckily for them they learn not only the limits and the costs but also the price as well as the peace of forgiveness. The lesson is that, if we are blessed in our choice of friends and construction of family, we are defined not so much by our mistakes but what we learn from them and how that knowledge changes us.
